(NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced its role as official GPS partner of the 2011 Teva Mountain Games, where fans and families are invited to search for hidden treasure June 3-5 with Vail, Colorado, as a beautiful backdrop. Anyone in attendance at the Games is welcome to join Garmin and OpenCaching.com for three days of geocaching, a free event that is fun for the whole family and combines exploration, education, entertainment and recreation.

Whether you’re sneaking in some fun amid an action-packed afternoon or leisurely finding caches throughout the day, you’re sure to discover a unique way to enjoy the great outdoors. And you’ll even have the chance to enter to win exciting prizes – including Garmin devices GPS devices, Princeton Tec Headlamps, First Ascent Jackets, Teva Gnarkosis Water Shoes, Nutcase Helmets and more!
Also, in the Teva Mountain Games’ Volvo 10K Spring Runoff presented by Garmin (8 a.m. Sunday, June 5), competitors can race for a cash purse against elite trail runners and top professionals in a course that features with constant elevation changes and mountainous terrain at almost 9,000 feet.
Geocaching is a globally popular, high-tech treasure hunt where participants of all ages explore the outdoors, hiding and finding containers of various shapes and sizes that are filled with collectables, trinkets and logbooks for signing in and letting fellow cachers know you were there. In 2010, Garmin announced the creation of OpenCaching.com, a completely free online community for creating, sharing and finding geocaches around the world. At OpenCaching.com – or using Garmin’s OpenCaching apps for iPhone® and Android™ – everyone can enjoy all of the caches and helpful information – the tips, descriptions, previous attempts, mass downloads, etc. – for free. Creating a cache consists of placing a container in a public area, saving the GPS coordinates and uploading them to a website. Finding a cache is as simple as searching the website and downloading those details to a GPS handheld.

A legacy of innovation
Since geocaching first began, Garmin has embraced the role of innovator and leader. Garmin was the first company to offer open and closed treasure chest icons on the screen of the device. Garmin devices featured the first dedicated application with the “Geocaching compass,” and the direct “Send to GPS” function started with Garmin. In considering the environment – and ease of use – the industry leader introduced paperless geocaching for increased efficiency and decreased waste as users could see descriptions and helpful hints right on the screen of the device instead of relying on numerous printouts for each cache. Garmin’s chirp™ wireless beacon is the latest breakthrough in geocaching. Affordable, durable and waterproof, chirp can communicate with, and be programmed by, any compatible wireless-enabled Garmin handheld for a more interactive and enjoyable geocaching experience. Cache creators and seekers alike will enjoy the benefits as chirp stores hints, transmits multicache coordinates, counts visitors and confirms the cache is nearby.
Since its inception in 1989, Garmin has delivered 85 million GPS enabled devices – far more than any other navigation provider – making Garmin a household name in the automotive, aviation, marine, wireless, outdoor and fitness industries.
