Garmin Announces Ruling in “Ambato” Patent Case
OLATHE, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Garmin International, Inc., a subsidiary of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN) announced today that a verdict was reached in the patent litigation initiated by Ambato Media LLC against Garmin International, Inc. in the Eastern District of Texas.
The verdict found that Ambato’s patent was infringed by Garmin’s personal navigation devices that were once capable of using the MSN Direct service. These devices were discontinued in 2010 and the MSN Direct service was shut down in January 2012. As such, the verdict will not have any impact on Garmin’s current products or services.
The jury awarded Ambato $500,000 in damages. “Although we disagree that Ambato’s “television receiver” patent is infringed by these discontinued Garmin navigation devices, we are pleased that the jury rejected Ambato’s demand for exorbitant damages,” said Andrew Etkind, Garmin’s vice president and general counsel.
